A dynamic leader is sought for the Indiana Arts Commission, an Executive Agency under the Office of the Governor. The Executive Director reports to a 15-person Gubernatorially appointed commission responsible for developing, supporting, diversifying, and expanding the arts for all.

As change manager, the incumbent will advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and access, will nurture Indiana’s creative assets, champion authenticity and engagement, and assist in the transformation of communities and lives through education and relevant public service.
As team builder, will forge relationships within state government as well as with the private and public sectors; will develop inclusive strategies for artists, arts providers, and communities through public planning, research-informed decision-making, and robust citizen involvement.
As thought leader, will help citizens advocate for the arts to decision-makers and influencers. Will have an expansive knowledge of the arts and allied sectors, including tourism, economic and community development, education, and philanthropy.
As public steward, will create a culture of continuous improvement for the organization with sound fiscal, operational, and performance management. Will be responsible for integrating the organizational perspectives, roles, and responsibilities of staff, Commissioners, and the Governor’s Office.
Salary commensurate with qualifications.

PURPOSE OF POSITION/SUMMARY

As head of the Indiana Arts Commission (“Agency”), an Executive Agency of Indiana State Government under the Office of the Governor, and in alignment with the goals and directives of the Office of the Governor and the Governor’s appointed Commissioners, the Executive Director of the Indiana Arts Commission is a public servant responsible for the overall leadership of the Agency which has as its mission to positively impact the cultural, economic and educational climate of Indiana by providing responsible leadership for and public stewardship of artistic resources for all of our state’s citizens and communities. The Executive Director is the public face of and responsible for the overall leadership of the Agency through engagement and actions of the Commissioners for the Agency, in developing, supporting, strengthening, fostering, diversifying and expanding the arts throughout the State of Indiana for all citizens. The Executive Director should maintain a broad subject matter knowledge of the state and national arts environments, as well as arts communities and organizations, to produce results of public value delivered in an accountable, fair, transparent, equitable, diverse, inclusive and ethical fashion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership. Provide results-oriented leadership to the Agency to achieve its goals in alignment with the goals of the Governor and the Governor’s appointed Commissioners.
Development. Develop and implement arts opportunities and enhance creative communities in the state.
Strategic Planning. Lead needs assessments and engage stakeholders in the Agency’s strategic planning.
Financial Administration. Direct Planning, submission and appropriate use of Agency’s budget.
Policy Creation. Provide guidance for the creation of policy for the operation of the Agency.
Research. Identify and develop research regarding arts access, workforce and public needs.
Capacity-Building. Help strengthen artists, arts organizations and communities’ access to the arts.
HR Management. Manage the professional staff to achieve the Agency’s goals and objectives.
Communications/Representation. Serve as face, voice, diplomat, and relationship-builder for the Agency.
Relation with Commissioners. Analyze and develop engagement with the Agency’s Commissioners.
Public Policy.  Assist the Commission with analysis, development, and implementation of public policy.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in nonprofit management, arts administration, business administration or public administration, or closely allied field. Advanced professional degree preferred (applicable work experience can be considered in lieu of an advanced degree).  The successful candidate will have extensive experience in arts management, preferably having previously managed state or related public agency division or department, with similar duties. Demonstrated leadership ability, strategic planning, ability to articulate organization’s vision are expected, and extensive personal involvement in and commitment to the arts are expected.
