Job Summary:

The Indianapolis Art Center promotes life-long learning through hands-on art classes and activities. The Art Center’s Summer Art Camp focuses on the art-making process to promote children’s curiosity, problem solving, independence and confidence and serves a wide variety of ages and skill levels. Camp Counselors assist the Camp Instructors and Camp Director in all aspects of operating the Art Center’s camps.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with youth, a general knowledge of various art techniques and materials, be dependable and have a positive and friendly attitude. All camp staff will promote and nurture the education of students by planning and tailoring courses of study; providing a safe, supportive, and positive environment conducive to learning; and keeping students informed about various Art Center opportunities. Counselors must be friendly and enthusiastic ambassadors of the Indianapolis Art Center’s mission and provide exemplary customer service to our students and patrons.

Essential Job Functions

1. Assist with general operation of Summer Camp Program

Welcoming campers and families
Checking campers in and out
Interacting and supporting campers
2. Supervise lunch and snack breaks

Leading group activities during studio breaks
Enforcing all safety guidelines
3. Assist Camp Instructors in teaching utilizing best practices:

Assisting with lesson modifications needed for special needs and various levels of prior experience and abilities
Incorporating a variety of teaching methods including, but not limited to, hands-on learning, discussions, referring to visual aids and artwork on display
Maintaining a safe, secure and healthy educational environment by establishing classroom behavior expectations with consistent enforcement; communicating safety information and procedures to students; and following all Art Center policies and procedures
Ensuring accurate documentation of class outcomes by taking attendance, and facilitating student surveying
4. Manage materials in an effective and sustainable manner

Explain the expectations for the use of materials, equipment and studio space
Assisting with set-up and clean-up of materials and studio spaces.
Clean equipment, studio space, and store all materials after each session and throughout the camp class time to follow COVID safety protocol.
5. Be an Engaged Team member to promote personal growth and development of best practices in the Education Department

Attend meetings, trainings and program events as determined by program staff
Respond to emails/calls in a timely manner
Complete, correct and approve your timecard in a timely manner
Maintain positive interactions in promotion and retention of Art Center programs and activities

Competency Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

Possesses the proficiency (either through education and/or experience) to engage students of all abilities, assist in the teaching of concepts for the specific courses taught, and inspire students’ growth and creativity
Time management, organizational and planning skills
Flexibility, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills
Education and Experience

A combination of education, training and experience working with youth
Experience working with diverse and underserved audiences
Classroom and behavior management experience
CPR certification
Art professional experience, a personal art portfolio may be requested
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Camp counselors are required to travel to and from the Art Center campus
Occasionally required to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs
Perform physical tasks of day to day camp program
All Employees must pass a criminal background check prior to employment.
