PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) believes in supporting a climate where arts and culture thrive. It’s apparent throughout the fabric of the Indianapolis International Airport that it is a public facility that’s not only accessible and easy to navigate, but also visually and aesthetically appealing. Permanent and temporary art collections are displayed in both public and post-security areas throughout the airport. Much of the artwork in the airport's permanent collection was created by artists or poets who live in Indiana or have ties to the Hoosier state.
Since 2014, the Arts Council of Indianapolis has been the airport authority’s visual arts programming partner and has worked to bring the best of Central Indiana arts and culture to enhance the airport setting. With the 10-year anniversary of the new terminal and a focus on the passenger experience for today and tomorrow, the IAA is developing several new opportunities for permanent and temporary opportunities for art in the terminal.
DESCRIPTION OF OPPORTUNITY
The Arts Council of Indianapolis invites visual artists to submit images of pre-existing, two-dimensional or digital artwork for reproduction as a large-scale, temporary mural. The mural will be digitally printed on adhesive vinyl, and will be attached to an interior window. Two murals will be produced and installed in early 2019. It is anticipated that new murals will be created every two years.
ARTWORK SITE
The artworks will be installed inside the terminal, in the concourse connector at either end of the passageway between Concourses A and B. The artworks will be viewed primarily by ticketed passengers and airport employees moving between the two concourses, although they will be somewhat visible to viewers standing at the east end of Civic Plaza, which would include airport meeters and greeters.
COMPENSATION
Each selected artist will receive $500 as compensation to enable professional, reproduction-quality photography of the original artwork and as a licensing fee for the use of their image. Artists are not responsible for producing the finished vinyl artwork.
COPYRIGHTS
The submitting artist must have produced the artwork, and the artist must own the copyright for the image. Images with shared copyrights must also include authorization from the other copyright owner(s) to submit the artwork for consideration.
At all times the artist retains full copyrights to their work. If selected for this project, artists will enter into a licensing agreement with the IAA to allow their work to be used in this context and for the associated publicity and promotion.
The Arts Council and IAA are not responsible for any third-party infringement of the artist’s copyright or for protecting the intellectual property rights of participating artists. TIMELINE
SELECTION PROCESS
Arts Council staff, members of the Arts Council’s Public Art Selection Committee, and representatives of the Indianapolis Airport Authority will identify two artworks to be recreated as adhesive vinyl murals. These artworks may be by the same artist, or may be by different artists. Should the Arts Council receive an insufficient number of entries, we reserve the right to invite artists to submit images.
WHAT TO SUBMIT
If you are selected, you will be asked to submit high-resolution files within two weeks of notification. These high-resolution files will be EXACTLY as shown in the submitted image, in JPG or TIFF format, sized at 5.5" x 21.75" with a resolution of 300 pixels per inch. If you do not already have digital files with this level of resolution, you will need to get the artwork re-photographed. The compensation provided will allow you to do so.
