Butler University, one of the nation’s leading master’s comprehensive universities, was founded in 1855 by abolitionist Ovid Butler on the principle of equal access to higher education regardless of gender or race. The Jordan College of the Arts, which includes the Art + Design Program as well as the departments of dance, theatre, arts administration, and the School of Music, provides focused professional study and collaborative, creative experiences within the context of a strong liberal arts university. We emphasize the development of students as artist-citizens who will become leaders in arts and society.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Art + Design program at Butler University invites applications and nominations for a full time, non-tenure track Instructor of Art History to begin Fall 2018.

  • Teaching responsibilities include introductory and upper division courses in Contemporary and Modern Art and/or Design History as well as survey courses. Preference will be given to candidates with areas of focus in Social Justice, Diversity, or Non-Western Art History. Course offerings should include developing student competency in research and writing.
  • The position supports students in the Art + Design Program and delivers classes as part of the university core curriculum.
  • Academic advising, student mentoring, committee participation, and community service are expected of the successful candidate.
  • The ability to teach courses in a secondary or studio area would be valued. Continuing excellence in teaching and service is expected to qualify for reappointment.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated quality teaching, commitment to the professional development of students, and participation in service activities.
  • A PhD is required prior to appointment, plus a record of research and /or scholarship, and teaching at the college level.
  • Experience working with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff is valued.
  • In addition, it is expected that the candidate will have a background in developing online courses or using online course components.
