The Johnson County Community Foundation (JCCF) invites local artists, emerging artists, art students and creative community members to submit mural designs for the Color the County Mural Program’s 2018 selected locations — one in Franklin and one in Edinburgh.

BUDGET:  $1,000 plus materials

ELIGIBILITY:  No restrictions

DEADLINE:  May 11, 2018

Note:  A design is required to apply for this project.  Applicants are not compensated to develop their design.

Program Information

The Color the County Mural Program joins artists/aspiring artists and communities through the collaborative process of mural making to create powerful artworks that can transform public spaces, neighborhood identities and individual lives.  The selected designer(s) will join forces with the JCCF to implement the high quality murals. It is expected that the mural program will create a pedestrian friendly, aesthetically pleasing environment for visitors and community members. JCCF will celebrate each work of art with a summer Community Painting Day where residents of all ages will help bring the murals to life.

Site Information

  • Franklin, IN:  S. Main Street bridge underpass (concrete surface)
  • Edinburgh, IN:  100/102 E. Main Cross Street (rear facing facade)

Design Criteria

Successful designs are bright, colorful and appealing to both pedestrians and viewers in vehicles. To be classified as artwork and to avoid inadvertently violating signage ordinances, designs should not include logos, phrases or branding for any business, product, good, activity, service or private interest. Since locations are public and visible to viewers of all ages, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, designs must not include nudity, suggestive poses, hate speech or imagery that any group might find obscene, offensive or morally shocking. Political, religious or memorial artwork is also unacceptable.

Selected designs will be applied using exterior paint and a clear-coat graffiti block directly on the location surfaces. The application method of the design is not limited.

Selection Process

The Judging Panel is composed of mural committee members and JCCF partners. Panelists will review the entries and select the finalists based on the following considerations:

  • Artistic quality and strength of concept
  • Contemporary relevance and appropriateness for our time
  • Architectural, geographical, socio-cultural and historical context
  • Originality and uniqueness, and
  • Suitability to the surrounding neighborhood
