Army & Navy Parks have historical significance as the locations where military and family members exchange their goodbyes before getting on the train the nearby Central Station to serve their country. During the heyday of passenger railroad services in Memphis in the mid-20th century, Army Park and Navy Park were common areas for passengers to grab a breath of fresh air while traveling. The Parks currently feature a passive urban plaza, and renovations are in the design phase to construct new water fountains, benches, and picnic tables, and replace existing sidewalks.
The UrbanArt Commission and the City of Memphis are commissioning public art sculptures to enhance Army & Navy Parks. The selection committee expresses an interest in a public art piece for each of the two parks that will:
$90,500 for both sculptures, all-inclusive. Up to three finalists will receive a $1,500 honorarium for a design proposal.
Any artist currently living in the United States of America. No artist may receive more than two art enhancement commissions in any five-year period. The art selection committee will select three finalists based on their applications; professional qualifications; ability to work within a budget, meet deadlines; and successful completion of previous public art projects.
