Introduction

The nonprofit group Friends of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park has obtained grant funding to renovate the mural on the Pool building located at 1701 Broadway Street, Indianapolis.

The goals of the renovation project are:

  1.       to continue to honor historical figures and our park namesake by designing new images of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Senator Robert Kennedy to replace the worn images on the building and
  2.       to design new imagery telling the neighborhood story of the Public School 27 Masters of Disaster Chess Team, a story we feel connects powerful children of the past with children in the present who visit the pool

Artists must be open to designing artwork that at least in part could be executed in a paint-by-number style by volunteers. Volunteers may be involved in preparation and final work such as cleaning, priming, and adding a final clear coat depending on budget.

Budget

Current budget is approximately $9,000 and the Friends are seeking additional grant funds to expand the work that would be completed by the artist. The mural may be completed in part by volunteers.

Timeline

Artists should be available to meet monthly with the Friends and Indy Parks representatives during the design stage approximately 3 times. We hope to have the final design approved by all parties by June 30, 2024. We anticipate mural painting no later than July 31st.

Artist Scope of Work
The final selected artists will be responsible for the following:

  • Based on the approved concept proposal, develop final design documents, detailing every physical feature of the mural and its integration with the site.
  • Execute mural painting in a manner that conforms to the approved concept proposal
  • Provide maintenance and conservation instructions for the completed mural.
  • Work cooperatively and maintain effective communication with all parties involved in the project.
  • Participate, as requested, in community outreach and dedication events.

The public art opportunity is open to professional artists over the age of 18 residing within Marion County, with particular consideration given to those living within a 2 mile radius of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. BIPOC artists strongly encouraged to apply.
