The Arts Council of Indianapolis, in partnership with IndyGo and Square Cat Vinyl, seeks Central Indiana-based musicians to perform at selected IndyGo bus stops from September 2-7, 2019.  This week marks the opening week for the Red Line Rapid Transit bus line, and the debut of route improvements throughout the IndyGo system.

COMPENSATION:  Selected musicians and groups will receive $300 for a 60-minute set of all original music.

ELIGIBILITY: Musicians must be able to legally work in the United States.  All genres of music are welcome. Musicians based in Marion County will receive selection preference.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:  11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday, June 2, 2019

LOCATIONS:  Performance spots will be located along the new Red Line Rapid Transit route or at major bus line transfer points, near a station or, where possible, at the station but occupying a small footprint. The performance locations will be different for each day of the initiative.

MEDIA/PROMOTIONS:  Artists will be interviewed and promoted on social media of IndyGo, Square Cat Vinyl, Arts Council, and partners. Printed materials will be used to promote event, on bus marketing, signage at all stations, area businesses, and through all e-communication via IndyGo will be included.

TIMELINE:

  • Applications open:  May 1, 2019
  • Application workshop/Q&A session (optional):  May 15, 2019, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Square Cat Vinyl (1054 Virginia Avenue, Indianapolis, IN)
  • Submission deadline:  June 2, 2019
  • Notifications sent and musicians contracted:  by June 15, 2019
  • Photo sessions:  June 15-30, 2019
  • PR training:  TBD in early July, 2019
  • Performances:  September 2-7, 2019

CONDITIONS:

  1. All submissions must be done through OPNR: https://opnrmusic.com
  2. There are a total of 12 time slots available from September 2-7 ONLY.
  3. The time slots are scheduled during the peak morning and late afternoon commute hours—no other booking times are available.
  4. There are opportunities for both acoustic and amplified music.
  5. Because of copyright restrictions, all music performed must be ORIGINAL--no covers!
  6. Because of the size of the bus stops, groups must be three people or fewer.
  7. We will provide shade at each location.
  8. We will provide basic amplification (single channel amp with microphone).
  9. Additional amplification and sound board will be the performer’s responsibility.
  10. We will provide signage at the performance locations with the performer’s name.
  11. You may provide promotional material during and after your set, but you may NOT sell CDs at the bus stop before, during, or after the performance due to space constraints.
  12. Payment will be available via check after your performance.
  13. You will be photographed and filmed for documentary and promotional purposes and you must grant the rights for the Arts Council, IndyGo, and Square Cat Vinyl to document your performance; however, your performance will not be filmed or published in its entirety.
  14. If contracted, you must agree to attend a PR training session to learn how to talk about the initiative and use the PR toolkit that will be provided to you.

SELECTION PROCESS:  Representatives from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, IndyGo, Square Cat Vinyl, and the musician community (without a conflict of interest and with expertise in a wide variety of genres) will review the submitted profiles of interested musicians and will identify artists to fill each available time slot, plus a small group of alternates.

SELECTION CRITERIA:  The goal of the project is to highlight the wide variety of excellent music available in the city.  We anticipate selecting musicians who are reliable performers of high artistic quality in their respective genres, and who are enthusiastic about the public transit changes coming to Indianapolis.

HOW TO APPLY:

Step 1 (OPTIONAL):  Attend the Application Workshop/Q&A session to learn more about the opportunity, hear about what makes a compelling submission, and see a demonstration of the application process.

  • May 15, 2019, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Square Cat Vinyl (1054 Virginia Avenue, Indianapolis, IN). RSVP to Mike Angel, mike@squarecatvinyl.com

Step 2 (REQUIRED):

  • Visit http://www.opnrmusic.com and create a FREE profile. Fill in all the information that will allow us to learn about you and contact you.
  • Make sure your profile includes links to your website, social media, and online locations where your music is stored (YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, BandCamp, etc.)
  • Make sure your profile includes a good photograph of yourself and/or your group.
  • Profiles without photos, contact information or links to samples will not be considered!

Step 3 (REQUIRED): Apply to the opportunity by going here (or--once on OPNR--search for Square Cat Vinyl) and linking your profile to EACH time slot you are available and would be willing to perform. You will only be considered for the time slots you have indicated, so choose carefully. Linking your profile to one time slot does NOT indicate you would be available for all!

  1. It won’t allow me to submit because the deadline on OPNR is June 1st, though here it says 11:59pm June 2nd. How can I submit today?

    Reply

    • There was a website error–it’s fixed now and we have extended the deadline to Tuesday at midnight.

  2. I’ve written 40 original songs, between 1975 and now, but I don’t have a press kit or any songs in any public media. I have only played at open mic nights around town. Do I still have a shot a doing this?

    • If you have digital recordings of a few of the songs, or digital video of you performing, it’s free to upload them to YouTube. Then all you need is a way to contact you, and you can set up a profile on OPNR. Contact Mike Angel at the address indicated in the listing for more information.

  3. I am hoping and working for the day when I can do 60 minutes of ORIGINAL material but not there yet. Great concept, though.

  4. This is a great idea! We would like to apply for every time slot but opnr only seems to allow for one per day. How do we do that?

    Reply

    • If you apply for the day you want, you will be considered for both slots that day.

  5. I do like that idea. I think it’s very important for creativity and give more opportunities for musicians. Thanks
