POET TO PRESENT TWO “POETRY FOR THE PEOPLE & BY THE PEOPLE” WORKSHOPS AT MOUNDS STATE PARK

Presentations March 4, April 1

Poet John Sherman of Indianapolis will present two “Poetry for the People and by the People” workshops at Mounds State Park, 4306 Mounds Road, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on March 4 and April 1. The workshops have been scheduled prior to the April 15 deadline for the park’s annual photography and poetry competition.

Sherman, an Indianapolis-based poet with three poetry books and two spoken-word CDs, received an Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites grant from the Indiana Arts Commission. He has written poetry and taken photos in the park in preparation for the workshops.

Registration is required so that ample supplies and seating will be available.

The workshops are free. All supplies are provided. To register, email kmorgan1@dnr.in.gov or call the park’s nature center at 765-649- 8128. Sherman will also be on site to meet with students on field trips to the park on April 5 and April 12 to discuss the park and work on poetry based on the students’ observations. Registration is required.

Words and phrases that Sherman feels represent aspects of the park have been put on display at the park, with the request for the public to add their own.

These may be used in writing poems both for the workshops and for the competition.

Kelley Morgan, Interpretive Naturalist at Mounds State Park, said, “We are pleased to add John Sherman’s workshops to our schedule. We are confident that the number of poetry entries in our annual competition will increase, due to the timeliness of these workshops.” Visit the Mounds State Park 2017 Annual Photo and Poetry Contest’s Facebook page for information on how to participate. Sherman, a published poet, often combines his poetry and photography. As a result, this year’s competition has a new “blended” category where entries will include both poems and photos.
