Public Art RFQ – Indianapolis Marion County Public Library, Michigan Road Branch

Total Project Budget: $12,250

Budget Description:
Up to five finalists will be selected to develop concept proposals for this project. Each finalist
will be paid a $250 stipend for his/her proposal. The selected artist will be paid $11,000 for the
commissioned work. Artist will be responsible for own travel costs, materials, personal liability
insurance and any additional expenses associated with the fabrication and installation of the
artwork.

Project Details:
The Indianapolis Marion County Public Library is seeking qualifications from artists or
collaborative teams for the commission of a large public artwork(s) for its new Michigan Road
Branch. The project can encompass any media and must highlight and utilize the architecture of
the unique building. (It is highly recommended those submitting qualifications visit the branch
location at 6201 N Michigan Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268.)

About the Michigan Road Branch:
The award-winning Michigan Road Branch was designed by krM Architects and opened to the
public in December 2018 and has quickly become a cornerstone of the community.  It provides
its patrons with access to high quality collections of print and digital media, engaging spaces for
children and teens, a quiet reading room for adults, and reservable study and meeting rooms
for community groups, among other amenities.

ANTICIPATED 2020 TIMELINE:

  • Deadline for qualifications submissions: January 31
  • Notification of finalists: by February 28
  • Concept proposals due: April 30
  • Final artist selection: by May 31
  • Studio visit with artist to see in-process fabrication: by September 30
  • Installation of the artwork will be scheduled in consultation with the selected artist.

The Art Selection Committee would like the artwork installed by December 15. The artist will be responsible for installation preparation. When submitting your RFQ, please consider if you can work within this timeframe. Selected finalists will be invited to present their proposals to the selection committee.

Selection Information:
Consultant Paula Katz will review the qualifications of applicant artists and make recommendations to the Art Selection Committee. The Art Selection Committee is comprised of IMCPL staff, arts advocates, and community members. Selections will be based on the following criteria: Artistic compatibility as demonstrated in submitted artwork; Experience working on large-scale public projects; Willingness to meet all contractual guidelines; The use of content appropriate for all audiences.

Application Checklist:
Submit a digital portfolio consisting of the following items:
___ Cover letter or artist statement, clearly articulating fit and interest in this project.
___ Resume
___ 10 jpg images of previous artwork (file size should not exceed 1MB per image).
___ Two professional references.

  1. I’m interested in making a proposal. I’m in the process of painting large pieces mounted on wood of children all over the world using photos from my son’s travels and other sources.
