ReCrafting Math Workshop
Wednesday, May 16 at 5:30 PM – 8 PM
Sun King Brewing
135 North College Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202
For thousands of years women around the world have created and perfected traditional textile crafts like knitting and weaving. Long before the advent of computers, looms were programmed using punch cards to create intricate patterns. The complex mathematical ideas that underlie these traditional crafts—think trigonometry, computation and algorithms—have often been overlooked, especially when it comes to telling the story of women and STEM.
Indiana Humanities is excited to welcome their friends from Creativity Labs at Indiana University, who teach everything from how to make make a Barbie skirt, felt basket or fabric manipulated accessories while unveiling the math behind the craft—all while sipping Sun King beer. It’s crafty, mathy and a little bit drinky. They promise you won’t get another chance to do something quite like this anytime soon!
Recrafting Math is offered as part of Indiana Humanities’ Quantum Leap initiative, which explores the spirit of possibility and creativity when we bridge the humanities with science, technology, engineering, and math. The ticket price includes the cost of your materials and snacks. No prior experience is necessary. LEU (librarians) and CEU (teachers) credits will be available.
