The City of Angola Seeks Original Sculptures

   

Sculptures that are owned by artists will be on loan to this program for one (1) year. Application deadline is Monday, September 5, 2022. Priority will be given outdoor sculptures that have visual appeal to all ages. This event is open to local and national artists. Four (4) outdoor sculptures are estimated to be  accepted with an honorarium of $800.00/each. There is no additional travel or hotel.

Sculptures that are not accepted into the Angola program will be shared with other interested Steuben County municipalities (Angola’s home County), where a sculpture may be chosen for installation. It will be the responsibility of other interested parties to contact the artist and arrange installation and other related matters within their jurisdiction.

Eligibility:

Artist must be at least 18 years of age. Submitted sculptures must be original works created within the last five (5) years, suitable for outdoor display and for sale. Entries will be critiqued based on artistic merit, materials, construction, durability, maintenance, public access, public safety, variety of entries, durability in an outdoor setting, and size. The art will be selected by members of the City of Angola Mayor’s Arts Council.  Digital submissions (preferred) should be in .jpg format and under 4MB in size and labeled with the last name of the artist and the name of the work. (example: smith_name of work)

Artists will be notified of the selection committee’s decision by Monday, September 13, 2022. The date of installation will be Friday October 14, 2022, to be finished by 1:00 pm.

Along with entry form, image(s), and artist biography/resume. All entries must be received by Monday, September 5, 2022, (midnight). The City of Angola is not responsible for any entries received after September 5, 2022. Emailed entries are preferred. Please send to: downtown@angolain.org 

General Information:

o Outdoor sculpture lease - $800.00

o Artists are responsible for transportation, installation and removal at site.

o The City of Angola will not be liable for accidents or damage associated and during transportation and installation to and from the installation venue.

o Locations for the installation will be determined by the City of Angola.

o Bases will be provided for the sculptures and are owned by the City of Angola and/or its partners unless a different arrangement is made with the City of Angola.

o Any sales/leases of the sculptures will be conducted by the artists or their agent and will not involve the City of Angola.

o Sculptures are to remain on site for the duration of the project (October 2022 – October 2023.) unless other arrangements have been made with the City of Angola.

o Artist retains copyright for sculpture and grants the City of Angola a license to take and distribute images of the sculptures for promotional purposes.

For payment to be made on the day of delivery and installation, a completed W9, matching the name of the entity or person to which payment will be made, must be received by the City of Angola by Friday,  September 23, 2022, 4:30pm.

Sculpture Requirements:

o Indicate how the sculpture is to be attached to a base. Bases are approx. 2ftW X 2ftD X 3ftH.  Bolting is preferred. If welded, a steel base plate or steel strips should be securely attached to the bottom of each piece so they can be welded to a pedestal or concrete pad if this is how it will be mounted.

o Sculptures are for public outdoor display and must be durable and constructed with safety in mind. Sculptures must be sealed to avoid rust bleeding onto pad and pedestal as well as installation location.

o Sculptures must be a minimum of 3ft high.

Criteria for picking sculptures:

o Angola’s Mayor’s Arts Council will consider the proposal's artistic merit, materials, construction, durability, maintenance, public access, public safety, variety of entries, durability in an outdoor setting, and size.

o The Mayor’s Arts Council may opt to not accept any of the submissions, in which case the selection process may be reopened.

o Sculptures that are not accepted into the Angola program will be shared with other interested Steuben County municipalities (Angola’s home County), where a sculpture may be chosen for installation.
