High Point University in High Point, North Carolina is seeking artists for two commission opportunities. The campus has two locations for new exterior sculptures, and artists are welcome to apply for one or both of these sculpture projects. The most important guideline is for both of these artworks to speak directly to High Point University’s mission and values.

Budget:  $500,000 (1 @ $200,000, 1 @ $300,000)

Eligibility: Professional artists/teams who have experience completing site-specific art commissions with a budget over $100,000 within the past 5 years

About the University

High Point University is located in High Point, North Carolina. It is a private comprehensive institution, rooted in the liberal arts, with 4,800 undergraduate and graduate students from 48 states and 37 countries. 48 undergraduate majors are offered as well as 51 undergraduate minors and 13 graduate degree programs. The University also has doctorate programs in educational leadership, pharmacy, and physical therapy.

About the Sites

The first project is to create a unique and welcoming artwork to fill a small plaza and gathering space in the center of the school’s campus. The artwork should increase dwell time and transform the plaza to become a destination for students and visitors. The artwork could tell a story, it could be interactive, and/or it could incorporate seating for the students to utilize. Current concepts include kinetic sculpture, interactive artwork, and bronze sculpture. This site overlooks Hayworth Park, which consists of three ponds with fountains, the Human Link sculpture, and the Hoffman Amphitheatre with a pergola waterfall feature. There is electrical located in portions of the plaza. There is existing lighting and outlets. There is a pedestal where there was previously another artwork that is being relocated-- artists can incorporate it as their base, or it can be removed. The plaza and seating can be refigured as part of the artist’s concept. The new artwork should be more vibrant, less abstract, has more substance, and with a more literal message than the previous sculpture. There is also an entire recessed area around the existing base that can be incorporated into the artwork to include seating or make it more interactive.  ($200,000)

The second is a promenade sculpture on the south side of campus, at the intersection of new campus walking paths. It is near the Wanek School of Undergraduate Sciences, Congdon School of Health Sciences, Wilson School of Pharmacy, and Plato Wilson School of Commerce (which also houses a portion of the School of Art and Design). The artwork at this location should be realistic or figurative and speak to the values of the University as a whole and/or the department buildings around the piece. This sculpture should inspire and intrigue people as they walk the promenade. ($300,000)

Timeline

  • Applications accepted: starting September 13, 2018
  • Deadline to apply: October 12, 2018
  • Finalists selection: October 2018
  • Interviews: October 2018
  • Proposal deadline: November 2018
  • Final artist selection: December 2018
  • Project installation: July 2019

Selection Process

Qualifying artists may be interviewed prior to being invited to create a design proposal. Finalists will receive an honorarium of $1500 to develop and present a proposal. An additional stipend will be provided to Finalists to cover travel expenses for a site visit.

Selection Criteria

  • Quality of work samples.
  • Artistic Aesthetic.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively with planning groups.
  • Demonstrates the ability to design a site-specific work.

What to Submit

Required information for this application:

  1. Résumé/CV:  Submit a brief, current résumé or CV including contact information, website, previous relevant art commissions, design team experience, exhibitions/awards/grants, education, and at least 3 professional references (include contact name, organization, address, telephone, and email for each).
  2. Letter of Interest, including the following:Name, address, telephone, email, and website for all artist/design team members.

    Your interest in this project and your experience working on comparable projects,

    Your experience with architectural and engineering project teams.

    Your philosophy on public art, its integration into surrounding environment and how your work and experience will complement this project.

    Your eligibility with the multiple criteria for this project from the Selection Criteria section of this RFQ.

    Include any publications, third-party web postings/blogs, and art curator’s reviews of your work along with recommendations from other owners or commissioners of your art.

  3. Artwork Images:  upload five (5) examples of relevant artwork. For each image, you will be prompted to upload a main image. The application screen will also prompt you to specify the title of the artwork, location, budget (USD), year completed, medium, and dimensions.  You have the option to provide more images and information for your completed artwork by publishing a CODAworx “project.” With a CODAworx “project” you can include additional images and more information about projects or artwork you have completed in the past. To publish the additional images and information for your application, visit https://www.codaworx.com/account/project.  Images must be JPEG or PNG file format with a minimum of 620px width and maximum file size of 5MB. Slides, prints or any physical submissions of artwork will not be accepted.
