The definition of cultural appropriation is defined as the adoption or taking of specific elements of one culture by another culture. Appreciation for the different cultures are needed, seek to understand, and learn about another culture and broaden your perspective. Vividness is hoping to display creative works that highlight and focus on realistic and honest representations of culture. The exhibition aims to showcase quality work that brings both positive representation and pays tribute to people of color yet challenges the negative appropriation of a culture. Attention should be given to the concerns of culture appropriation versus cultural appreciation.
Vividness is open for paintings, printmaking, photography, drawings, prints, and mixed media. No videos or sculpture. All entries must be an original piece.
GALLERY: The Indiana University Kokomo Downtown Gallery is located in downtown Kokomo. The gallery displays artwork by students, faculty, alumni and local, regional and national artists throughout the year. They CANNOT accept payment through CAFÉ. There will be a $25 per artist entry fee that will be invoiced once the entry is received. (This must be paid regardless of acceptance into the exhibit).
ELIGIBILITY: The juried exhibition is open to all artists over the age of 16, who reside in the United States. All fine art 2-Dimensional media are accepted including: painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital, and mixed media. All work must be original, completed in the last two years. All work must be accurately represented in jpeg images. Work not meeting these criteria will not be exhibited.
PRESENTATION: Professional presentation of each piece is required. 2D artwork must be framed and have a secure way to hang the piece if it requires hanging. For canvases, the sides and all staples must be covered.
ENTRY: All entries must be made through the CaFE website https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=8094. All entries will be chosen from high-resolution (300dpi) jpeg images. Files not to exceed 5MB. The gallery reserves the right to reproduce images accepted into the show for promoting and archiving the exhibition. This exhibition will be on display in one of their two exhibition spaces. Questions should be directed to ugallery@iuk.edu subject line “Vividness”. There will be a $25 per artist entry fee that will be invoiced once the entry is received.
SALES: Sales are encouraged and they will receive a 30% commission for any sold artwork. The sale of artwork will be between the artist and the purchaser. There is a portion of their contract that you will have to fill out regards to the sale of your artwork. Once the artist receives payment, they will notify the art gallery and the gallery will invoice the artist for the commission.
DELIVERY & PICK-UP: Delivery and pick-up of artwork will be the responsibility of the artist. The artist may choose to either personally drop-off and pick-up the work during gallery hours or ship their work to the gallery. It is the artist’s responsibility to send any shipped artwork in a sturdy, reusable box with a PREPAID return shipping label inside. Any work not picked up 30 days after the end of the show will become the property of the Indiana University Kokomo Downtown Gallery.
