Submissions for Swing Batta! (Audio Play)

INFORMATION:
This is an audition submission page requesting 9 to 12-year-old youth performers (or those that sound that age) for the audio drama, Swing Batta! by Indiana Playwright, Garret Mathews. This original play was to be performed at this year's iNDYfRINGE theatre festival. Sadly, the live incarnation has been canceled due to safety concerns. But, it has morphed into a brand new audio project we are very excited about. All genders will be considered for this play.

THE PLAY:
What do you get when you combine a journalist and a baseball coach? A funny and heartwarming look at what it means to be a little leaguer in the '90s. Based on Garret Mathews' book "Swing Batta," the dialogue in this play is taken from ACTUAL CONVERSATIONS heard at practice and in the dugout. These kids are out to solve life's problems one fart at a time.

THE PLAYWRIGHT:
Garret has produced shows at iNDYfRINGE since 2015. This play is adapted from his book, "Swing Batta", published by the Michigan State University Press and well-received by The New York Times. This story is based on real children, real events, and real conversation overheard while in the trenches as a little league coach. Garret is retired from writing the metro column for the Evansville Courier & Press.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
EVAN – An impetuous, mischievous child who enjoys being the life of the party. He is the most physical of the players.
KYLE O’TAIN – A sickly child with Cistic Fibrosis who struggles with self-esteem.
DANNY – A brainy, super-confident boy whose actions can sometimes be a bit grating.
WALTER – A heavyset youngster who maintains good spirits despite being developmentally behind the other boys.
ANDY – Has little experience playing baseball as evidenced by his choice of shower thongs as footwear for practice.
OLIVER – A typical 9-year-old, like Andy, as indicated by their mutual desire to build a fort out of coach Weddle’s baseball gear.
MALCOLM– Easily impressed as evidenced by his jaw-dropping awe when he sees Joey’s underarms.
KENNY – A happy-go-lucky youngster who likes to have his face painted.
PHILLIP – A serious, musically-inclined child who carries his tonette to all team functions.
MARCI – A dominant personality.
JENNY – Usually kowtows to what Marci says and does.

PROCEDURE:
After materials are submitted and submissions are closed, You will be contacted about a virtual audition. Don't be nervous, it's just telling a story. They will rehearse virtually and meet individually (social distancing) each performer for the final recording.
