During the October First Friday Art Tour, many of the CCIC Artists will be taking part in a celebration of 10 years of art at the CCIC, kicking off with Nancy Lee’s “A Sparkling Diamond Celebration: Ten Years at the Circle City Industrial Complex,” with each identifying and reminiscing how long they’ve been involved in art at the CCIC and how they came to call the CCIC their art home.
Admission and parking are free, general programming starts at 6pm, although times may vary in individual spaces. With over 60 artists and art businesses, the Circle City Industrial Complex has become a destination for art appreciators and supporters of local work.
Twenty new studio spaces will celebrate their soft opening on the second floor, part of an extensive renovation project in that section of the building. “I’m very excited about these new artists, who bring a great diversity of mediums, perspectives, and backgrounds to the CCIC community,” said Rachel Ferguson, vice president of Teagen Development.
When Teagen Development first purchased the CCIC building, three and a half years ago, they were drawn toward the building’s potential to be a hub for the arts. “At the time, there were just nine artists on the rent roll,” said Ferguson. “Today, with the addition of the second floor studios, we have more than 70. That absolutely would not have been possible without the incredible amount of groundwork done by those intrepid few—Nancy Lee, Martha Nahrwold, Wug Laku, and others—who made the CCIC a place for artists to begin with.”
The Main Entrance of the building (identified by its black marble façade) provides easy access to both the South Studios and the North Studios (with a wheelchair accessible ramp and elevator). Maps of the building are also available in several locations to help visitors find all that the building has to offer.

Schwitzer Gallery
“Stories of Gun Violence Across America: Indianapolis,” a photography exhibit by Joe Quint, will open in its CCIC stop as it travels around the city, with sister showings in locations such as the Phoenix Theatre and the MLK Center. Quint has worked over the last four years to tell the stories of gun violence survivors, including the family members of victims and those who’ve witnessed horrific acts of violence. “It’s about honest storytelling,” said Quint, “and bringing stories of trauma, grief, and strength to life—without an agenda. The goal is to tell a diverse story, both in terms of demographics and type of incident, and show how none of us are ever more than one or two degrees of separations away from this epidemic.”
Also in the Schwitzer Gallery, the Masterpieces in a Day winners from Fountain Square’s Art Squared festival will be presented along with the remaining top ten pieces from the competition. Visual artists of any media had 6 hours to work outdoors around the Fountain Square neighborhood to start and finish a piece of art. Stokol Gallery
“REDACT: the words you wanted,” a Satch Artist installation show, will open in the Stokol Gallery, following up Banned Books Week. “REDACT: the words you wanted” pulls from the DH Lawrence controversial novel, “Lady Chatterley’s Lover.” First published in 1928, this book was banned in its unexpurgated version until 1960 in the United States. Satch draws inspiration from the power of the printed word and turns back the clock on our social landscape. The Stokol Gallery is located on the first floor of the North Studios.
Jeffrey Allen
Metal sculptor Jeffrey Allen will be showing work for the May First Friday. Having practiced the craft of welding and sculpting for over 20 years, the former active duty Marine has traveled the world and his art is influenced by the world’s beauty and mythology. Jeffrey Allen is located in the First Floor Corridor.
Arts & Images by Anthony Armstrong
Anthony Armstrong is a self-taught abstract painter and photographer. He highlights images of travel, street photography and human interest subjects. A chef by trade, and a photo enthusiast by hobby, Armstrong has grown to include abstract painting as another outlet of expression. In his photography, he prefers to work in black and white, so that the viewer will see other elements of the image, in the absence of color. Armstrong’s studio is located in South Studios.

Daily Epiphany Studio
Michele Burns and Kurt Kriese will share the evening in Studio B17. Kriese will show landscapes, large abstract paintings, and stained glass, while Burns will feature new “Nightlight Art,” photoluminescent paintings and mobiles painted with her own photoluminescent paint recipe that retains its glow all night long. Five Seasons Studio
“Perceptive Sisters—Women’s Resilience,” with abstract painter and University of Indianapolis professor of German and French Gerburg Garmann, will be showcased at Five Seasons Studio. Materials that have the capacity to return to their original shape after being twisted or stretched are called resilient. The term can be applied to people as well—people who have the ability to recover from adversity and defeat are considered resilient. In order to overcome many traditional obstacles placed in their way, women often need even more resilience than men, and consider resilience an essential strength to deal with what is thrown at them day in and day out. “My abstract/figural acrylic paintings are conceived in the spirit of sisterhood of women, who—with eyes wide open—perceive this reality time and again,” explains Garmann. “My use of vibrant colors is the metaphoric remedy—face after face—to these continual challenges and meant to create a strong and resilient sisterhood shaped through the concert of women’s unceasing perceptive gaze.” Host artist Martha Nahrwold celebrates over 25 years of creating art in her studio and over 11 years of First Fridays at the CCIC. Full Circle Nine Gallery
“Recent Works: Nathan Winship Smith, a collection of clay artwork by the eponymous artist, will be featured at the Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9). “My work is a critique on rules, laws, and social conventions that seem to govern social identities and individuality,” explained Winship Smith. He will present clay vessels and wall sculptures embodying multiple historical contexts through form and imagery. “The work aims to question the absurdity and seriousness of ideas about how individuality and social identity is created or lived into.” Full Circle Nine Gallery is located in the South Studios.

M10 Studio will host an exhibit celebrating the work of Indianapolis photographer Colleen Kliewer. An activist, social worker, and poet, Kliewer passed away in January, 2018. “A Sparkling Diamond Celebration: Ten Years at the Circle City Industrial Complex,” an anniversary collection by Nancy Lee, will premiere. While the traditional 10th anniversary metal is tin, diamond jewelry is also a favored gift. Nancy Lee’s October show will focus primarily on rings and earrings set with black and white gemstones. Lee will have faceted and raw diamond pieces, along with gems like white sapphire and moonstone—which is a favorite—black spinel, and some very nice cubic zirconia, at a variety of price points. Lee is planning a giveaway of a $100 gift certificate, free gifts with purchase, and refreshments. Patricia McCormick and Sara Wines
Patricia McCormick presents “Slightly Polished + Semi Precious,” a collection of diverse small works that ask the viewer to believe in “everyday” beautiful, and average desires to be phenomenal. McCormick teams up with guest artist Becca Hall, a self-taught artist working in acrylic paint and heavily influenced by pop art and gaming culture. McCormick is a mixed media artist with a background in traditional darkroom photography and printmaking, with an interest in the way meaning changes when images, especially photographs, are manipulated and combined with different media. She is currently contemplating the meanings of feminine, definitions of womanhood and transformation. “Slightly Polished + Semi Precious” runs in October and November. Katrina Murray will show collage works on paper and new whimsical works in oil, born out of her recovery from a concussion in 2015. Katie Sahm
Become a New Creation artist, Katie Sahm was born and raised in Indianapolis and spends most of her time painting, taking photographs, and attempting to make the world a more beautiful place one day at a time. Sahm works in a variety of media, but all of her pieces reflect her deep love for her faith. Katie Sahm is located on the second floor of the North Studios.
Strung Handmade Décor
Rachel Ferguson will premiere geometric mountain artwork, along with a body of work fresh of a fall arts festival run. Ferguson creates her Strung work by combining nails and string along with hand-painted or cut wood shapes exploring the cosmos or views right here on Earth. Strung Handmade Décor is located on the second floor of the North Studios.

About the Circle City Industrial Complex Artists
The Circle City Industrial Complex (CCIC) is a nearly half-million square foot industrial building, located at 1125 Brookside Ave., and was formerly home to the Schwitzer automotive company. Its industrial appeal remains and artists and artisans have made the space their home, carving cozy studio, work, and show spaces from the concrete and steel structure, and the CCIC Artists have grown in number to over 50 galleries, individual artists and artisans. The main artist entries are the North Studios entrance and the South Studios entrance, each marked with signage along Brookside Avenue. The CCIC provides free parking in a large lot, and is accessible by the Pogue’s Run Trail, connecting to the Monon Trail and the downtown Cultural Trail system.
