About Joy Hernandez
Joy Hernandez is the founder of Full Circle Nine Gallery, and has been showing her art around Indianapolis and Muncie since 2010. Originally from Kewanee, Illinois, she attended the Institute of Art in Chicago, studying animation, before transferring to the University of Indianapolis to major in Communication, especially news photography and electronic media.
“I joke that I have dual-citizenship, between the small town-rural world, and the bustling chaos of larger cities like Chicago or Indy,” Hernandez said. “I wanted to reflect that in my work, because those are two large elements of me; the feeling of comfort in either place. They’re not one or the other, it’s an appreciation of both.”
Hernandez uses a stenciling technique and blends or fades to bring about her ideas, usually on canvas. She will often add to areas with acrylic paint, but always works in a bright color palette with dark lines to set off contrast. The recent recipient of the “Long Live Frida” Purchase Award, Hernandez takes pride in her smooth blends and eye-catching color choices.
