Inspired by generations of artists, eight accomplished plein air painters set off in May for the Luberon region of Provence, France, a scenic area made famous by Van Gogh, Cezanne, and the post impressionists. Be immersed in the color and beauty of the region at “A Brush with Provence,” a group show of their paintings in Indiana Landmarks Center’s Rapp Family Gallery.
Painting outdoors in the plein air tradition, these painters drew inspiration from medieval villages, castles, colorful marketplaces, lime-green vineyards, orange tile roofs, window boxes, ocher-colored buildings, wild poppies, and climbing roses. They captured the silvery olive trees loved by Van Gogh and violet, pink, and gold skies over distant blue hills.
The show includes work from Chris Newlund, Donna Shortt, Pam Newell, Rebecca Justice Schabb, Rhonda Bontrager, Linda J. Peterson, Dawn Maloney, and Sherri Burritt.
Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available during the free First Friday opening, 6-9 p.m., when you can also tour Indiana Landmarks Center at 1201 Central Avenue in Indianapolis. Built as a Methodist church in the nineteenth century, the restored and adapted structure holds theaters and a reception hall in addition to the gallery and Indiana Landmarks’ headquarters.
