David Stuart MacLean is a PEN/American award-winning essayist. His essays and
stories have appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Ploughshares, Guernica,
The Bennington Review, Quarterly West, The Times (London), and on the radio program
“This American Life”. He was a Fulbright scholar in India, a cofounder of the popular
Poison Pen Reading Series in Houston, and now lives in Chicago. He is the author of
the memoir The Answer to the Riddle Is Me, named by Kirkus as one of the best books of
2014 and winner of the 2014 Society of Midland Author’s Best Biography/Memoir.
The Los Angeles Times says of his book, “MacLean has written a memoir that combines
the evocative power of William Styron’s “Darkness Visible,” the lyric subtlety of Michael
Ondaatje’s “Running in the Family,” and the narrative immediacy of a Hollywood action
film. He reminds us how we are all always trying to find a version of ourselves that
we can live with.”

David Tomas Martinez’s debut collection of poetry, Hustle, was released in 2014 by
Sarabande Books, winning the New England Book Festival’s prize in poetry, the Devil’s
Kitchen Reading Award and honorable mention in the Antonio Cisneros Del Moral Prize.
He is the 2015 winner of the Verlaine Poetry Prize. Martinez is a Pushcart prize winner,
CantoMundo fellow, a recipient of the Stanley P. Young Fellowship from Broadleaf
and a 2017 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellow. A second collection is
forthcoming from Sarabande Books. Martinez lives in Brooklyn and teaches creative
writing at Columbia University.
