He has left Chicago for California, hoping to find new inspiration in Hollywood and repair his splintered relationships with his grown children. His already complicated life gets even more dramatic when reports suggest that an earthquake has destroyed his latest creation, the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.
This is where Wright stands at the beginning of the Richard Nelson play Frank’s Home, which explores how Frank Lloyd Wright, a great visionary if less-than-perfect man, could design architectural wonders but couldn’t create a home for himself. On March 23, Indiana Landmarks and SiteLines will present a reading of Frank’s Home at Indiana Landmarks Center.
SiteLines, a Lou Harry/John Thomas production, stages outstanding plays that match themes, setting, and subject to audiences on their turf.
“People in the fields of architecture and preservation, and anyone interested in Frank Lloyd Wright, will find Frank’s Home fascinating,” says Thomas, who will perform in the production as Wright. “And, as a script-in-hand production, it should also draw an audience of those simply interested in plays and acting, so it should be a lively group.”
Joining Thomas as Frank Lloyd Wright in the eight-character play will be Central Indiana actors Ericka Barker, Bob Harbin, Sarah Hoffman, Clay Mabbitt, Ryan Mullins, Joshua Ramsey and Georgeanna Smith Wade. The actors will read the play, sans costumes and sets, in historic Cook Theater, a resonant space created in 1900 with wood walls and ceiling. The script-reading format of the evening will lead naturally into an informal post-show conversation about the play’s themes.
Frank’s Home is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Publishing Inc., New York. It was commissioned by Playwrights Horizons with funds provided by The M.E.W. Commission Program.
