Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4, also known as the Italian Symphony, is meant to evoke the sights and sounds of Italy, and Mendelssohn called it “the jolliest piece I have so far written.” The 2011 piece Gutta cavat lapidem by Italian composer Lucia Ronchetii was created with the image of a drop of water having the power to hollow out stone.
