During this talk, we will go on a virtual tour of an exhibition held near Smith’s home in Bolton Landing in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, and explore a recent gallery exhibition held in the Chelsea district of Manhattan.
Smith learned to weld while working in a Studebaker plant in South Bend. He would become recognized as the first American artist to employ this industrial technique to the making of sculpture. In Bolton Landing in the 1940s, Smith met progressive performing artists who inspired inventive, Surrealism-inspired works of art. As his sculptures became increasingly large and abstract, he placed them in the fields surrounding his home, where, over the next two decades, a dialogue with the light, space, and colors of the mountain landscape became central to his practice. Through vibrant visual materials, we will explore these distinct regional influences, and the radical ways they manifested in Smith’s art and changed the very definition of what sculpture can be.
About Jennifer Field:
Dr. Field is Executive Director at The Estate of David Smith as well as a curator and author. She has held curatorial and research positions at The Museum of Modern Art, the Willem de Kooning Foundation, and Di Donna Galleries. Her projects have included the exhibitions Songs of the Horizon: David Smith, Music, and Dance; Surrealism in Mexico; Martin Puryear; Manet and the Execution of Maximilian; and De Kooning: A Retrospective. Field received her MA from Hunter College and her PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
