Opera Sundays: Two One-Act Operas

Carlisle Floyd’s first opera Slow Dusk conveys a simple yet compelling tale of young love and the forces that keep the young lovers apart. Set in the poverty stricken sand hills of the Carolinas, the young heroine must confront tragedy and her family’s prejudices against the young man to whom she has given her heart.

The Stoned Guest by the satirical composer P.D.Q. Bach (Peter Schickele) is a parody of classical opera, combining elements from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Bizet’s Carmen. Deriving its name from the “stone guest” character in Don Giovanni, The Stoned Guest takes classical opera and turns the genre on its head by parodying stereotypical opera plots and characters resulting in a hilariously outrageous sequence of events.
