Paula Scott-Frantz: Meditations on Felt

The artist writes: “I began this project by building from my own foundation in textiles, turning so formless wool and silk into solid non-woven felt. I’ve learned to trust this process of felt-making. It moves me through the grey empty spaces of not knowing, on to what comes next while I remain rooted in the now. It is only later when a piece is completed and I have listened to the mysteries that the stories unfold.”

Scott-Frantz, an award-winning artist, attended IUPUI where she studied art and philosophy. For the past decade, Scott-Frantz has concentrated on the wool-into-felt process by creating non-woven fabrics for wall art and wearables. In 2013, the Indianapolis Museum of Art commissioned a special felt exhibit for National accessABILITY Month. Flat and 3-dimensional pieces were designed for people with special needs to be able to touch, hold and explore.

When not in her studio, the artist presents workshops in both contemporary and traditional felting.
