'Plastic Swords': An Art Show

Plastic Swords encapsulates the idea of childhood innocence and ignorance of what the symbols and structures around a developing person represent. Through odd juxtapositions of personal portraiture, religious relics, and pop culture iconography I seek to hold a mirror to the acceptance of violence in mainstream culture.

Mimicking and spinning my own take on the Memphis Design culture of the 80’s and 90’s for these recent works. When you think Memphis think… Pee Wee’s Playhouse, Saved by the Bell, TMNT, Trapper Keepers, all of these garish and bold patterns paired right on top of one another. I am using this style to create a contrast to the sculpted form to create a feeling of floating through snapshots of memory. Pattern breaks up the form and when paired together with other works will create a surreal space of personal memory, with a dual celebration and critique of the culture of violence and materialism.
