Ligeti’s monumental Sonata for Viola Solo is a bridge between the past and the future. Wollman recognizes the past with baroque movements paired with each sonata movement. These pairings complement and highlight the influences present in Ligeti’s sonata. Wollman also commissioned companion pieces for each of the pairs, creating a triptych out of each Ligeti movement: past, present, and future.
