“TELEPHONE” will exhibit works by 20 CCIC artists created through a process designed to mimic the childhood game, “telephone,” in which players whisper a word or phrase from ear to ear to reveal the revisionist process of listening, with the last player guessing what the first player said. Instead of using words and phrases, CCIC artist will use an alternative process of secretive art-making to interpret, reinterpret, and pass along.
Neighboring CCIC tenant, Indy Film Fest, provided a seven-minute film, selected for the 2018 Indy Film Fest, to kick-start this playful exhibit. All 20 works will be exhibited alongside the secret film during April’s First Friday. Attendees will be able to watch this short film and look at the works inspired by it in the order that they were passed from artist to artist. These works will also be displayed during the Bigger Picture Show on April 13th, at CCIC, and will remain on display for the duration of the Indy Film Fest. The 2018 Indy Film Fest will be held at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, opening April 26th and closing May 6th.
On January 31, CCIC artist Katrina Murray received a private showing of the inspiration. In a short 3-day sprint, Murray distilled the film into a work of art. Both the film and her work remain secret, as she was asked to send only a photograph of her work to the next artist in line. Each subsequent artist will have a similar task to fulfill, using a short period of three days to capture the essence of the work passed to them in secret.
“Being the first artist in the telephone game gave me the opportunity to talk with (Indy Film Fest Executive Director) Dan Moore about the film and it was fun knowing I was seeing something few others had seen,” said Murray. “After watching the film, I went through a creative roller coaster. I came up with a series of ideas, including performance and installation. I worried that I might not make the midnight deadline, but came back to my current medium of collage. The initial brainstorming helped me focus on the important notes in the film. Surprisingly, I delivered several hours ahead of the deadline. Whew!”
With over 60 artists and art businesses, the Circle City Industrial Complex has become a destination for art appreciators and supporters of local work. Just northeast of the Mass Ave Art and Theatre Cultural District, at 1125 Brookside Ave., the CCIC Artists First Friday programming is a must-see stop, while events and viewable hours continue throughout the month.
The CCIC building is accessible off of 10th Street, near the North Split, and also via the Pogue’s Run Trail, connecting to both the Monon Trail and the downtown Cultural Trail system.
