Tells Stories with Quilts—A Spirit & Place Event

Quilting has long been a part of family history.  Quilts are not just blankets to keep us warm. They are a record of family history, stories, and events; they come in all shapes and sizes and are even an expression of abstract design.  Join Freetown Village as we partner with the Stutz Artist Association on Friday, November 13, 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. in the Stutz Business and Arts Center, 212 W. 10th Street.  This Spirit & Place event invites all to see and learn how early hand-sewing transformed the practical art of quilting into a vibrant and unique art form.

Listen to our interpreter from Freetown Village share tales about the history of African American quilting. Explore quilting displays—and even the Stutz Artist’s Gallery invitational fiber arts exhibition, Make Your Mark: Dream—and listen to a presentation of “The West was Won with Needle and Thread” by Threads of Time Creative Sewing and Retreat Center. Internationally recognized African American historian and folklorist Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, as well as experts from The Quilters’ Hall of Fame, will also speak.

Professional quilters from Quilting by the Stitch will provide a hands-on quilt-block experience that will be assembled into a special Spirit & Place quilt. College Mentors for Kids will display pieced fashions the youth created. Guests are invited to bring their own quilts for appraisal by certified quilt appraiser, Caryl Scheutz. 

Street parking will be available on Senate Ave., 11th Street, and Capitol Ave.  Enter the Stutz from the 11th Street entrance along “Bearcat Alley.”
