Join us in person or online for a program exploring the oldest known celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States.

The oldest known celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived on Galveston Island with word that the Civil War was over and enslaved people were free. On June 5, Indiana Landmarks hosts “The Legacy of Juneteenth,” featuring the documentary Juneteenth: The Galveston Story, co-produced by Sam Collins III, Juneteenth historian and National Trust for Historic Preservation Advisor.
