Tin Dollhouses Exhibit

Pressed steel (also known as tin) dollhouses were first introduced in 1948 and dominated the 1950s, remaining popular until the 1970s. The economic boom after WWII, an active steel industry, and the introduction of hard plastic, made mass production of tin dollhouses and plastic furniture possible. The first metal houses on the retail scene originated from ideas used in dollhouses that had been constructed in the late 19^th century, resembling the early lithographed models of wooden or paperboard dollhouses. Included is a 1962 house that has its own fallout shelter.
