WOIA is an online group dedicated to raising awareness about gender inequality in the arts, as well as bringing together all of the women who contribute to the arts in Indianapolis. WOIA member and Full Circle Nine Gallery founder Joy Hernandez will be hosting the event, which will cover a wide variety of media, with each artist showcasing their own unique viewpoint and talent.
“WOIA was formed so female-identifying Indianapolis artists could come together, network, and share resources,” said Katie Josway, the group’s founder. “I love that members are using the network to make things happen amongst themselves. It was always meant to be a group, run by the group. And it’s so rewarding to see that happen.”
About Women Of Indianapolis Arts
The group was founded in August of 2016 as a way for female artists to connect with one another and to share art opportunities in the area, plan events among themselves, and to give support to each other in an environment not always felt as welcoming as expected.
“Women have been historically ignored as professional artists,” explained member Vicky Shaffer White, a painter. “Together, we can present a stronger front, and at the very least, encourage each other to that end.”
Word of the group quickly spread among the Indianapolis artist community, and membership grew as women banded together, and told their friends.
“I’m in the right place, finally!” said Amanda Lynn, also a painter. “I found support, ideas, and opportunities, as a network larger than I could have made on my own. ‘Together We Can’ is emblematic of WOIA’s purpose to build a supportive artistic community here.”
Syd K. Innovaria joined because she believes in creating a strong force and community for female artists. “It’s always been absolutely beautiful to be a part of something so real and raw and magical as this group of creative genius women are,” Innovaria explained. “It furthers putting us out in the eye of the public, makes us important again. We need that. We need to be recognized.”
Some artists, such as Stacey Torres, joined to be part of a ‘dynamic artistic sisterhood, while others, like Mindie Gum-Grivell, are transplants looking to grow roots. “The female artists in this city have played a major role in the connections I’ve made both personally and professionally, and this show is representative of this in our city. I’m honored to be included—together we can!” said Gum-Grivell.
About the Full Circle Nine Gallery and the Circle City Industrial Complex
The Full Circle Nine Gallery operates as an artist cooperative gallery, with each of the over a dozen member artists and the board dividing gallery duties and artists roles. The artists will work together to help each other advance in skill and practice, as well as to bring success to the gallery. It is located at 1125 Brookside Ave., Indianapolis, IN, 46202, in the South Studios section of the Circle City Industrial Complex.
The Schwitzer Gallery is located on the second floor of the North Studios in the Circle City Industrial Complex. The newly-renovated space is made available by building owners Teagen Development to encourage art and creativity by hosting guest art shows, both by CCIC artists, or interested parties not already in the CCIC.
