Twlight of Oldenburg

Twilight of Oldenburg is an exhibit featuring photography by William Foley.  The exhibit will be on display in the Marian University Art Gallery located in the Michael A. Evans Center for Health Sciences from October 18 – November 10, 2017.  A closing reception of the exhibit and artist talk will be held Thursday, November 9 from 4-6 p.m. The exhibit and the reception are generously funded by the Talbot Street Art Fair and are free and open to the public.

Bill Foley’s recent body of work Twilight of Oldenburg, is a candid portrayal of the Sisters of St. Francis from Oldenburg, Indiana. The photographs in Foley’s Twilight of Oldenburg series speak of Marian University’s rich history. Marian University grew out of the dedication and vision of Sister Theresa Hackelmeier and the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg.  Foley’s “Twilight” pictures evoke a sense of calm, quiet and reflection and tell a story of shared humanity.

Foley’s photographic career began in 1974 when he purchased his first SLR camera while on spring break from Indiana University.  Shortly after, he began to study the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andre Kertez, Gordon Parks, Carl Mydans and W. Eugene Smith. Bill has worked in over 49 countries and seen his work published in numerous major newspapers and magazines around the world.  In 1983 he won the Pulitzer prize and was nominated again in 1984. In 2013, he was named a “Distinguished Alumni” of the IU School of Journalism and was also inducted into the Shortridge High School Hall of Fame, joining author Kurt Vonnegut and former Indiana Senator Richard Lugar. Bill taught at New York University in the Tisch School of the Arts from 1999-2005. Presently, Foley is the photography professor at Marian University.

The Marian University Art Gallery (Evans Center) is located on the north end of the second floor of the Michael Evans Center for Health Sciences on the Marian University campus.
