Indianapolis Opera opened its 45th season with the ever-amusing Elixir of Love. This production transports you to the summer of 1910 in the city of Lucca Italy, where Donizetti’s comic opera focuses on the plight of Nemorino, a simple man hopelessly in love with the beautiful and wealthy Adina. With a bit of Indiana inspiration and a little Mario Andretti wrapped in, Dulcamara and his assistant arrive to town with their used hobby racer car, which happens to be out of fuel. Looking to prey upon this unknowing little town, they cheat the people out of their money to buy their fake Elixir to fuel their racing habit. But nothing gets past Adina, who will be played by Ashley Fabian, a rising star from Pittsburgh Opera. The quintessential romantic comedy, Elixir of Love juxtaposes the romantic idealism of Nemorino and the social pragmatism of Adina, while playing with the tropes of Belcore and traveling salesman and racecar driver Dulcamara. This production will provide an intimate setting, emphasizing that opera, summer love, and racing can all happen under one roof! It will be sung in Italian with projected English supertitles.
Whether it's racing or Italian culture or love or comedy, our production of Elixir of Love has something for everyone. More importantly, it ties into the community that we love here and pays homage to one of the great racing legends in our city.
