Watch Thread Become Art: Neelu Jain

Temari balls are often given to wish the recipient a brilliant and happy life. “My canvas is a sphere, my medium are threads and the possibilities are limitless,” says Neelu, who studied under a Japanese Temari master and describes her art as the intersection of craft, design, sustainability and revival. Temari is an ancient Japanese folk art, but “given its time-consuming nature, it has taken a back seat in today’s world, to the point of extinction,” she explains.

Originally used as toys, Temari balls became intricate decorative items and are now considered symbols of love, esteem and honor.  Today, when few people practice this art, Temari is highly valued as both an exclusive piece of art, and a cherished gift.

“Keeping the traditional techniques as my base, I have altered and invented new patterns to keep it in sync with the local demand,” says the Carmel fiber artist. “I have used locally grown and manufactured materials in order to give it a new home. A Japanese craft, made by an Indian with an Indiana twist is bound to be unique and create magic!”
