[more+]

In the Harrison Gallery,

FINE by Tashema Davis. Tashema Davis had been using the word “FINE” frequently for the past few years, masking the turmoil in her life. After she was diagnosed with PTSD, depression, and anxiety from her military service, Davis embraced painting as a form of therapy. Today, Davis is on a journey to healing and wholeness through therapy, faith, and art. Embracing this new chapter, she incorporates goldfish into her oil and acrylic paintings, letting them freely swim within her creations.

In the Gallery Annex,

Season of the Moon by India Cruse-Griffin. Through her signature style of mixed media collages and “slice of life” paintings, Cruse-Griffin explores the constant guiding force of the Sun and Moon.

In the City Gallery,

Nocturnes by Allen Bannister. Bannister’s latest collection of black and white charcoal drawings featuring night scenes from around Indianapolis showcases the beauty of the city’s trees, clouds, the moon, street lights, and more. Each drawing is a blend of light and shadows, bringing a unique perspective to the nocturnal world.

In the Speck Gallery,

Sola x Luna by Kristi Marsh Watson. In this exhibition, Kristi Marsh Watson employs her abstract style to portray the beauty and allure of the sun and moon. The sun and moon, like paradoxical twins, symbolize both familiarity and mystery while also reflecting the duality of day and night.

In the Sky Gallery,

Ultraprayer by Caleb John Smith. A series of photographs informed by the artist’s journal entries over the past year, each one corresponding to a different phase of the moon.

In the Underground Gallery,

Lunaris, a group exhibition. Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the Solar Eclipse through a diverse range of mediums, including sculptures by Henry Dean, mixed-media collages using antique materials, printmaking, and photography by Kipp Normand, and a collection of moon jars from various local artists. This exhibition captures the essence of this rare celestial phenomenon when the moon passes between the sun and Earth.

All shows will open at 6 pm on Friday, April 5th.

In-person gallery tours will open for visitors Monday-Friday from 9 am - 5 pm. Online galleries will open on April 6th. Make an appointment or view the online galleries at harrisoncenter.org/buy-art.

Special Senior Hours are every Friday from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. No appointment is needed.

With support from: Arts Council of Indianapolis, City of Indianapolis, Indiana Arts Commission, Christel DeHaan Family Foundation, and Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation.

FABLES AND FOLKLORE will open the concert with the long-awaited return of Gregory Hancock Dance Theater (GHDT)’s production of PINOCCHIO, a theatrical masterpiece created by Executive Artistic Director Gregory Glade Hancock and inspired by the classic tale. Featuring a cast of colorful characters in a Steampunk-setting performing theatrical choreography, this version weaves the cautionary tale of love and sacrifice into the visual storytelling. Joined by characters Geppetto, the Cricket and the Blue Fairy, PINOCCHIO, a puppet who magically becomes a real boy, sets out on his own to discover the world and experiences consequential adventure.
In the second half, GHDT will present the World Premiere of THE GOLEM. Inspired by the Czech folklore The Golem of Prague, this original work by Executive Artistic Director Gregory Glade Hancock tells the story of a mud creature crafted by a rabbi to defend the Jewish ghetto of Prague from persecution. GHDT brings elements of this story into our current world, where once again, the world needs golem-like protection from sometimes invisible enemies. A timely tale, THE GOLEM utilizes the idea of a solar eclipse as a metaphor where the light is overshadowed by darkness, but then reappears as a sign of hope and goodness. Featuring both melancholy and joyful klezmer music, THE GOLEM utilizes
layers of musical and theatrical nuance to tell a tale from the past yet direct a voice to the present.

Curiosity is an En Pointe Indiana Ballet original that offers many curious surprises inspired by Cirque du Soleil®.  We are excited to present this jazz inspired piece set in the romantic Victorian era where Science and the Industrial Revolution were new and fantastical.

Curiosity showcases all genres of dance including ballet, swing, jazz, modern, contemporary, tap, and is fun for the whole family.  We can’t wait to entertain the audience with our own take on the peculiar fantasy world of steampunk science fiction.

Artistic Directors Pollyana Ribeiro and Robert Moore are using the elegance of ballet to translate this imaginary world into a beautiful and quizzical work of art. It is certainly a fast-paced performance that everyone in the family will enjoy!
