Arts for Lawrence (AFL) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that connects arts and community to inspire everyone every day. Founded in 2006, AFL emerged as a response to the need for improving the cultural environment in Lawrence Township, Indiana. Located in the historic Theater at the Fort since 2015, we are the largest nonprofit arts organization in the City of Lawrence and the northeast quadrant of Indianapolis. We foster arts programming to reach underserved audiences, improve the local economy, and provide a sense of place for our diverse community members. Today, AFL offers 14 annual signature events including festivals, theater performances, outdoor concert series, art classes, art exhibitions, poetry readings, and more. The majority of these programs and events are free to the public. As stewards of the historic Theater at the Fort, we also oversee the partnerships that bring a diverse blend of performances to the stage in drama, music, dance, storytelling and more. The diversity in programming is designed to make art accessible to all—from the casual consumer or discerning critic – to the seasoned professional or the budding artist. We advocate for the need and importance of a thriving arts destination in the shaping of a safe and lively community. AFL has developed partnerships to provide another 68 performances at the Theater for the 2018/2019 season in drama, music, and dance. AFL also offers the stage to schools at no cost so that local students are able to experience a stage presence. We prosper thanks to committed individuals and institutions that believe in the transforming power of the arts. Our hope is that you can find a place to feel at home in our organization to enjoy the arts as we invite you to be part of our cultural community while we build our vision: Living Lawrence – a vibrant arts destination.

It is this voice, expressed either singularly or united with others that have the power to inspire the kind of creativity and innovation that is so vital to our community. We believe that the stage should be a forum for communication and engagement, not just entertainment. Finally, it is through the act of musical storytelling that our collective humanity is expressed and defined for generations to come. At this moment, the Indianapolis Opera is focused on continually reaching new audiences, communicating the profound beauty of the human voice, inspiring the next generation of students in our schools, and creating a home for creative voices at the Frank and Katrina Basile Opera Center.
