E. Adele Schluge Art

For the past couple of years I’ve been painting small pieces on cereal box cardboard; subjects include people and scenes on my East Side of Indianapolis; biblical narratives; religious images; woods and water, Indiana farms and small towns, urban sites; old buildings wherever I go.  I consider my style naive (not “native”!) and not at all academic. Each painting expresses something I’ve seen, hope for, imagine, appreciate, and every single day brings new inspiration.

I grew up in Vincennes, Indiana, on the Wabash River, and cherish my childhood there and its roots in my German Irish forebears. Our pre-Civil War red brick house stood on the corner of 8th and Harrison, part of the original property of William Henry Harrison.  My degree from Indiana University is in art education, and I loved teaching my own and other Irvington children art around my kitchen table for years as our four were growing up.

Eight years ago my husband and I purchased an abandoned house in the old Holy Cross neighborhood; now our little 1880’s cottage is the only original home on the block, as an explosion of new construction changes the profile of these Irish immigrant houses.  I hope Holy Cross can maintain a balance between old and new, and that the diversity of our neighborhood won’t be lost.

I recently concluded a project, “Urban Icons”, benefiting Young Men, Inc., a mentoring outreach of the Great Commission Church of God at 33rd and Arsenal. The work done at YMI itself, for over a quarter of a century, benefits our city by helping to shape responsible, peace-loving, respectful, educated and contributing youth.  A portion of every sale of my artwork goes to YMI, so thank you for your support of this wonderful ministry to under-served young men on Indianapolis’ East Side.
