Sine Qua Non Photography: Images by Nathanael Handlang

I use photography as a means to share my vision of the world with those around me; not in a documentary sense, but rather interpretive. I seek to emphasize how the emotional impact of a scene or object can be directly related to the viewer’s state of mind. The world (and thus by extension, art) is more than just evaluation; I see it as interactive, feeding back an emotive response that I attempt to capture and share. I hope that through the study of this emotional response I can derive a cathartic effect that can be revisited, thanks to the permanent nature of photography.

My subject matter choices originate from a continuous effort to view my surroundings with more than a passing observance. I strive to find the mystery and beauty in things that generally go unnoticed, whether they be small details, or larger in scale. Recently I have begun focusing on the multitude of strange and unique elements in the natural world; things that are abstract, even though originating in nature.

These “Natural Abstractions” challenge me to view the world around me with an open mind, as well as open eyes. Hopefully they will challenge those who view my art in the same enjoyable manner.
