I never claimed to be an artist nor enthusiast, but have always admired and respected the various displays of art.   I was introduced to my artistic ability in high school when I had to pick an ‘elective’ to satisfy a mandatory class schedule.  Once I captured the attention of my art teacher, I knew that I was on to something.

I was very much inspired by the events of 2008 when we elected our first African American president, so I commissioned myself to draw a piece which I titled, ‘Dream, Believe & Achieve’.  This pencil drawing is a likeness of Dr. King(Dream), Obama (Believe – Yes we can!) and Mandela (Achieve – after being imprisoned for over 27 years, when released, he became the first black president of South Africa). This strong betrayal of strength adorn the walls of many friends and family, and is what I call my “official” coming out piece.

In 2008 I was commissioned, by an incredible local artist, to write about the two amazing sculptures that were to be part of the Meet the Artists XX – “Homecoming” event.  One piece, entitled, “Pick Me – The Emancipation of Check-X” tells the story of  how mega churches promise a means to the promised land at the expense of it’s followers.  The other described the impact of Jazz on society during a time when music and inclusion were misaligned. This was my first “unofficial” launch into the art event world.

In 2012, I participated in my first, official, ‘coming out’ art exhibition(prior to this, I characterized myself as a closet artist, doing, primarily, commissioned based work). The Meet the Artists XXIV – “SuperBowl Extravaganza” is where I had an incredible opportunity to display some of my work, network with other artists and art enthusiasts, speak about my pieces, and gain recognition as an artist.

Since then, I’ve participated in various local Art Exhibitions, and displayed my work at a local art gallery.  Currently, my art can be seen at a local contemporary furniture store, and on my website: DeeMillerInspired.com.

Often called a wordsmith, I believe that the ingredients for a good story or poem can come from many venues….experiences, imagination and observations… just to name a few.  What makes a story/poem come to life is the writer’s execution.
