My current body of work centers on the theme of personal wholeness and identity.  I am interested in issues which I view to be spiritual: ideas of masculinity and femininity, generational inheritance, self-image,  and disassociation—to name a few.  I use the human figure alongside  the still life to create a symbolic picture.  These “pictures”  are an attempt to give form to the complexity of the human soul, to inner pain, and ultimately—to inner healing.

ARTIST BIO

Using crude, sometimes naïve mark-making and paint application as language, artist David Hicks investigates contemporary spiritual experience.

David received an MFA in Painting from Indiana University Bloomington in 2008. While there, he created large scale paintings, reminiscent of art historical altarpieces. Highly influenced by artists Stanley Spencer and Jacob Lawrence, he considers his work contemporary expressions of faith.  The themes in his work often range from comedic moments of human bumbling, to creating a somber mood of contemplation, and sometimes a mix of both. Interested in further unveiling the notion of forgotten altarpieces, David considers his paintings as such and has donated them to the permanent collections of religious organizations.
