“My paintings prove to be an ongoing investigation of color, form, space and light. Color is always the definitive character in my paintings. Colored forms develop into certain shapes and start to communicate with each other on the picture plane and myself. The painting, in a sense, “tells” me what direction it is heading and I take away and put in color and more color until I am satisfied with the surface, colors and composition. The colors themselves come from a certain idea, mood, luck, experimentation and risk. It is important to me that my paintings are sensitive yet bold, and that they have a sense of mysterious space. The space in my paintings evolves from the use of color, texture and thick and thin applications of paint. The color creates space and as my marks travel across the page, blobs and spots pull and push into the two-dimensional picture plane. The forms and colors are set up in a way in which they hint at figures, landscapes and architectural spaces but are never purely representational. The abstraction of these components helps to set up visual dialogues that are open to interpretation. I see many of my paintings as windows; light flooding in and the repeating image of a rectangle. Dreamy clouds flow in and out of the windows to create a soft picture and message. Some paintings consist of organic forms in nature representing light and air contrasted with geometric aspects of the window’s architecture.” Megan Jefferson
