Katherine Kemp grew up in a small town in Michigan called Plainwell. During her school days she was gravitated to the art world which she excelled in. Upon high school graduation she ventured to Grand Rapids, MI to further explore the Arts at Kendall School of Design. Although she put aside her passion for art to raise two daughters as a stay at home mother, her creative side was still an integral part of her life. Being able to volunteer with hospitals, schools and local organizations gave her the outlet for her creative skills. Then in 2005 she was able to invest and renovate a 90 year old home in Westfield, IN, creating the city’s only current art gallery. The gallery opened in 2006 and represents the contemporary work of Indiana artists. At this time, she was able to re-immerge from a 20 year sabbatical and begin painting herself. This has brought a positive and inspiring outlet for herself while being able to successfully sell her work to businesses and collectors. Works range from $250-$1600 with sizes from 12X12 to 48X48. At any given time, she can be found working on 6-8 pieces of artwork at a time with completion anywhere from several weeks to months. Her style is expressive abstract which allows her to explore a fascination and emphasis on texture and color for an ever changing possibility of combination and outcome to each painting. By using this technique, she tells a story much like chapters in a book, so each painting reflects life and nature through experiences, people and places. Her endless potential of expression can also be seen in her fine silver jewelry, which she designs and creates from PMC (Precious Metal Clay). As a certified instructor she finds great satisfaction in assisting others to find their artistic “voice” and create pieces that enables them to experience the artistic process.
