Matthew Wayne LaFary was born and raised in Bargersville, IN, a small farm town on the outskirts of the Indianapolis suburbs. In 1999 he was accepted to Savannah College of Art and Design where he would go on to study painting, printmaking, illustration, and three-dimensional animation. In 2003 he graduated Summa Cum Laude, receiving his BFA, and returned home to work in Indianapolis, Indiana. Matthew now works as Art Director and Build Designer for an Indianapolis based design and fabrication company.
Since 2009 Matthew has been traveling central Indiana and the surrounding area producing works on film both documenting and exploring social stresses of the local landscape. In March of 2012 Matthew released his first complete body of photographic work, DECLINE vol. 1, with a month long solo exhibition at the Indianapolis Arts Garden. The work included eighty 35mm frames made between June, 2010 and June, 2011. Matthew has since produced this second volume of DECLINE and has continued to work on a small number of other ongoing projects. He continues to work entirely with film and vintage manual equipment.
