The experience allowed James to purchase computer equipment and to pay for research and travel expenses to the National Archives, Library of Congress, and Smithsonian Institution. He also traveled and researched in Ohio, Colorado, Wyoming, and at other libraries along the Oregon Trail. James’ purpose was to complete research on a history of the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, 1862-1866 and its history in the West during the Civil War. As a result of the fellowship, James has a new drive to toward more creative writing opportunities. Since receiving the fellowship, he has written a monthly essay for Western Art Collector magazine. He plans to complete a book-length manscript about Civil War history to be published within two years.
