I am a writer, photographer, and historian. My writing includes poetry, creative nonfiction (including pictorial history, architectural history, and essays on social and political topics), and fiction. I often give lectures on various arts-related topics and poetry readings. I have published nine books and two spoken-word CDs; have had poetry, fiction, and nonfiction appear in scores of publications. I have published many photographs in magazines, newspapers, and books on a variety of topics. I also serve as an editor and proofreader for other authors. I do book promotions and other public relations and marketing tasks for visual and literary artists. I am the recipient of a Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, six Individual Artist Program grants from the Indiana Arts Commission (five for literature, one for photography), and four Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites from the Indiana Arts Commission and the Department of Natural Resources (poetry workshops at Mounds State Park). My photos and my large-format posters of my photography and poetry have appeared in numerous juried shows and solo shows, including Gallery 924, Harrison Center, SullivanMunce Gallery, and Garfield Park Arts Center. The poster with the poem, “Anne Frank 1974,” was purchased by and hangs in the office of a senior staff person at the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect in New York. I am participating for the fourth year in the Flava Fresh group exhibits at venues in the greater Indianapolis area. I am also the recipient of other awards and honors for my writing, photography, and pictorial-history books, including being selected as a Finalist in the Walt Whitman Award competition sponsored by the Academy of American Poets for the manuscript of my third poetry book, Marjorie Main: Rural Documentary Poetry. I have had three exhibits at the Harrison Center (“Looking Up College Avenue,” photography/history/historic preservation, with Mayowa Tomori; “Nigeria on My Mind. Again,” images from years of association with Nigeria and Biafra; and “Looking Forward: Beauty.Pride.Defiance.,” 12 large photo profiles of women undergoing or who had undergone chemotherapy. I am a member of PEN American Center, ASCAP, Authors Guild, Writers Center of Indiana, and Igbo Studies Association. I have presented a series of academic papers at the Igbo Studies Association conferences in the U.S. and Nigeria. I was installed as a chief, Oneh Nkuma 1 of Eleme, by the King of Eleme, Nigeria. I founded and moderate “Indy Arts Friends” page on Facebook that promotes arts-related news and events in central Indiana.
