Program Description:
ArtTroop is a bi-monthly program meant to empower veterans and active military service members by telling their stories through art making. Participants of the program build upon their existing artistic skills and learn new methods in a variety of art media. The program culminates with a professional exhibition that is on display during the annual Veterans Art Day.

Job Summary:
The ArtTroop instructor will support our veterans and active service members by providing an empowering, supportive space conducive to art making and community building. The ArtTroop instructor will help students cultivate new artistic skills through exercises that include technical expertise as well as those that focus on the development of problem-solving abilities, confidence, exploration, and community. Additional emphasis should be placed on creating curricula that supports continued education and transferable skills beyond the classroom. In this role, the ArtTroop instructor may create lesson plans with therapeutic benefits in mind, however, this program is not an art therapy service. Development of coping skills and positive outlets is therefore a secondary outcome resulting from the delivery of meaningful and engaging lesson plans tailored to classroom needs.
Essential Job Functions:

Prepare course materials within specified timelines and budget. Develop lesson plans that focus on ArtTroop goals: art making, material exploration, creative expression, community building, and cultivating healthy outlets.
Plan lessons that introduce new skills, build on previously learned techniques, and provide exposure to a wide breadth of mediums and applications.
Research techniques and knowledge about various art practices to guide students in developing new skills.
Prepare art examples to reinforce lessons, including but not limited to presentations, demonstrations, visual aids, and handouts.
Ensure accurate documentation of attendance, class outcomes, and demographics.

Manage materials effectively and resourcefully.Maintain Art Troop expenses.
Ensure all materials, supplies, tools, and equipment are managed and handled appropriately.
Work cooperatively with students to set expectations around material requests, maintenance, and clean up.
Engage in equipment safety training as necessary.
Clean all materials, equipment, and studio space at the end of each class session and return items to the proper Outreach/ArtTroop materials storage.
Plan accordingly to transport materials to alternative classroom settings as needed.

Uphold best teaching practices that align with the mission and standards of the Art Center.Engage students through a combination of discussions, projects, exhibits, visual aids, demonstrations, and critiques with an emphasis on encouraging feedback and dialogue.
Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy educational environment by establishing classroom behavior expectations with consistent enforcement, communicating safety information and procedures to students, and following all Art Center policies and procedures.
Design lessons that are adaptable and open to modifications. Tailoring lessons to those with various artistic abilities and interest levels, learning styles, prior student experience, special needs, and physical limitations is critical to this role.
Address classroom concerns with supervisor and students as needed and through appropriate channels.
Maintain student privacy and confidentiality.

Be an engaged team member of the Outreach Department and a positive ambassador of the Art Center.Attend meetings, trainings, and key program events as determined by supervisor.
Respond to emails from administrative staff and students in a timely manner.
Maintain positive interactions and relationships with Art Center staff and faculty.
Facilitate the annual Veterans Art Day event and the ArtTroop Exhibition & Reception.
Assist in promoting the program and reporting outcomes to stakeholders as necessary, e.g. Art Center Board of Directors and funders, etc.
Other duties as assigned.
Competency Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

Possesses the proficiency (either through education and/or experience) to teach various mediums, concepts, and techniques across multiple disciplines. Applicants with experience in a wide variety of 2D and 3D art practices will be given preference.
Basic computer competency and familiarity with virtual platforms and technologies.
Time management, organization, and planning skills.
Ability to engage, enlighten, and inspire students while demonstrating compassion and empathy.
Flexibility, resourcefulness, and problem solving as related to effective instruction.CPR certification, or the ability to complete training, is required for all Outreach instructors.

Education and Experience:
Experience working with, mentoring, and/or teaching diverse audiences, including age, race & ethnicity, gender, physical abilities, and trauma backgrounds.
Experience working with veterans and active military service members preferred but not required.
Background in trauma-informed care and strengths-based approach to learning preferred.
Professional art experience. A personal art portfolio may be requested.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Instructors are required to travel to and from the Art Center campus. Access to reliable transportation is a must.
Consistent weekend work is expected.
Occasionally required to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
Perform physical tasks related to the medium being taught.
All Employees must pass a criminal background check prior to employment.
