New Photography 2022

Aurora PhotoCenter, in partnership with Gallery 924 and the Arts Council of Indianapolis, seeks entries from Central Indiana photographers and photo-based artists for a group show, entitled New Photography 2022. This exhibition will showcase topical subjects, themes, modalities, and methods that are engaging Central Indiana photographers now, in this important moment.

Since Aurora’s last exhibition at Gallery 924 in November 2019, the world has experienced seismic changes, with the pandemic, protests for racial, social, and economic justice, and shifts in how we work and make work, go to school, and live. Many in our Central Indiana arts community relied on photography as a means to document and respond to the changes of the last two years. Photography helped us keep a record, keep us sane, and keep us creating with beauty, revelations, and new directions for exploration.

New Photography 2022 will highlight photographic work of any process, size, or shape made on or after January 1, 2020. Aurora PhotoCenter will consider any photo-based images that fit within that wide description, so feel free to get creative in its interpretation. This can include the combination of photography with other media. However, photography should be the primary media.

The opening for New Photography 2022 will be Friday, February 4. 2022 from 6 – 9 p.m.

Eligibility

All Central Indiana photographers and photo-based artists over the age of 18 are welcome to submit work for consideration. For these purposes, Central Indiana is considered Marion and the seven surrounding counties: Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Shelby, Johnson, Morgan, and Hendricks; artists must live in one of these counties to be eligible.

Submission Process

To submit work for consideration, please fill out the online form by January 7, 2022, 5PM:

The online form requires the following information:

  • Up to 10 (ten) images. Images do not need to be high resolution, but the image quality should be set to “high.” The resolution should be no larger than 72 dpi and the file size for each image should be under 1 MB.  Acceptable file formats are jpeg, TIFF, and pdf.
  • Title, date, medium, dimensions* and price**. List any special installation requirements on image list as well – e.g. needs electricity, comes with own plinth, etc.
    • *Please include dimensions of actual display space, meaning including any frames. Also, if your work is framed with anything other than a simple black gallery frame, please send a photo of the frame as well.
    • **Please note that Gallery 924 takes a 25% commission on all artwork sold in the gallery; however, artists should keep their prices at a consistent level based upon previous sales, not commission rates.

Submissions must be received by the deadline in order to be considered. There is no fee to enter.

Selection & Delivery Process

Submissions will be reviewed and participating artists selected by Aurora PhotoCenter. Selected artists will have 1-5 images accepted into the exhibition and will be notified via email.

2D work must be framed (if appropriate), wired, and ready to hang. There are no size restrictions on artwork. If your large-scale work is accepted into the show, the gallery staff will work with you to find a display solution.

If accepted for exhibition, work must be delivered to Gallery 924 on Monday – Friday, January 24 – 28, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and if not sold must be picked up within a week of the close of the exhibition.

Artists are encouraged to attend the opening, but are not required to do so. Artwork will be insured by the gallery for the entirety of the time it is in the gallery. Artists will be given a digital marketing tool kit and asked to help promote the show to their patrons.
