The Truth of Freedom & The Language of Race

Juneteenth Exhibit at Newfields Call for Submissions

How do you visually express the language around race? With the truth of history challenged, and the contentious discussions of critical race theory, how can art contribute to the conversation? How do you explore the hidden meanings of words, or confront the unspeakable? How can art empower truth in people’s language and expressions? How does language define people, impact them, and how do they use language for freedom and liberation?

Newfields is looking for works that explore ideas of freedom, race, Blackness, identity, history and justice. All mediums, styles, and forms welcome, including 2D and 3D. Newfields is particularly interested in works that use text or graphics in some way, including visual poetry.

The museum will also be looking for musicians and spoken words artists to make recordings to be looped in the gallery during the exhibit. These submissions should relate to the theme of the exhibit. If anyone is interested in participating or helping to coordinate, please make note of this in a separate email from any art submission. Further details about audio submissions will be forthcoming.

Open to Black artists living in, or from Indiana.

All art submissions due by 4/5. Please email truthoffreedom317@gmail.com with 3-5 high quality images. Please include title, medium, and dimensions. Also, please provide contact info, including socials, and a brief bio. Artwork does not need to be complete by time of submission but should be developed significantly to reflect the final product.

Artwork drop off 5/24-5/25 before 11am.

Exhibit 6/1-7/16.

Please pay close attention to the hanging requirements as Newfields has a new hanging system and D-rings require a different placement than traditional wire hanging.
