Project Description
The College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has recently renovated 124,256 gross square feet of Everitt Laboratory to become the centralized home of the Department of Bioengineering. Everitt Laboratory also provides a central location for integrated bioengineering research, teaching, outreach, and translation. As bioengineering is inherently interdisciplinary and integrative, it is expected that the Department of Bioengineering and its faculty, staff, partners, students, facilities, and resources in Everitt Laboratory will provide a unique opportunity to address many of the grand challenges that confront individual, societal, and global health.

The department defines Translational Bioengineering as including basic science that has direct implications and applications toward humans, the development and use of pre-clinical animal models as representative investigative models of human disease, the facilitated transfer of medical technology from academic research labs to the industrial sector, and most importantly, the direct application of bioengineering principles and technology on humans. Translational Bioengineering will be a major focus of the department’s educational mission in Everitt Laboratory. The newly remodeled Everitt Laboratory includes research, teaching, operations, and administrative spaces that directly support the long-range vision for Translational Bioengineering. This focus and vision are critical for the department, college, and campus to attain the research and teaching excellence and recognition it seeks. Artwork Goals
The committee is looking for an interior piece or pieces to compliment the atrium/student lounge space.
The committee is also looking for an exterior sculptural piece to complement both the building and its uses.
Choice of medium for the project is broad but should be in material suitable for a long life for the interior and exterior environment in which it will be placed. The artist should consider works that have an impact from both a close-up range and from a distance.

Artwork Location Description
Location: A -Interior
Feature artwork in the atrium/student lounge space of the building will receive a higher level of finish and dimension. This is an area where artwork can be seen by multiple vantage points or will serve as a significant focal point for occupants.

Theme: Artwork relating to science and bioengineering.

Location: B -Exterior
The proposed location for a distinct sculptural piece is near a high-traffic area.

Medium: Material to be suitable for the ever-changing Illinois weather.

Theme: Artwork relating to science and bioengineering.
