Introduction

The City of Pittsburgh is celebrating the 200th anniversary of our City’s incorporation. The Bicentennial provides an opportunity to acknowledge our great triumphs, from innovations that created mighty industries to world class medical and educational facilities. The city has known, and overcome, severe economic challenges while continuing to gain momentum and recognition across our nation and the world. The 2016 celebrations are seen as a bridge honoring our deep roots in history while acknowledging the changes we must implement to offer opportunities for generations to come. The Bicentennial celebrations are a year of events coordinated by a committee of community and business leaders.  The committee is looking to cap a year of festivities with a public installation incorporating our City’s sister bridges through a temporary display of lights that will open on Light Up Night 2016 (November 18, 2016).

Opportunity

The Bicentennial Committee is seeking artists and/or lighting designers to create a temporary lighting installation that will highlight the beauty of the bridges along the Allegheny River between the 6th Street Bridge and the Convention Center. The installation must be for a minimum of six weeks and may last up to one year.

Of note, the Warhol/7th Street Bridge will be under reconstruction and cannot be included within the scope of the lighting project. On Light Up Night, festivities will be focused in and around the Rachel Carson/9th Street Bridge with a large celebration in the David L. Lawrence Convention Center as part of the National League of Cities Conference.

Eligibility

This Request for Qualifications is open to any artist, designer or team who have the vision and skills required to produce this temporary installation. The selection committee will take into consideration designers’/artists’ past work and experience working in the public realm.

Teams from Pittsburgh and the Southwestern Pennsylvania region, MBE/ WBE firms and those that are committed to paying prevailing wage who qualify are strongly encouraged to apply.

Budget

The budget for design and installation is $200,000 and includes: all design fees; artist models, renderings, and construction documents; fees to outside consultants such as architects or engineers; the fabrication, transportation, and installation and dismantling of lighting exhibit. Duquesne Light has committed to provide the power required for the temporary lighting installation.
